Visibility and present weather sensor for airports and AWOS systems

VPF-750

Visibility and present weather sensor for airports and AWOS, measuring MOR/EXCO from 10 m to 99.99 km with up to 50 WMO Table 4680 codes and 45 METAR codes, plus precipitation amount, RS-232 or RS-422/RS-485 and optional ALS-2 interface.

Introduction

Major airports and automated weather observing systems need a complete weather picture they can accept into operations quickly. This top-of-range VPF sensor combines wide-range visibility measurement with integrated precipitation and temperature/humidity sensing, so you can report current and recent weather from a single instrument.

Forward scatter optics report Meteorological Optical Range (MOR) and Extinction Coefficient (EXCO) from 10 m to 99.99 km, with calibration in accordance with ICAO 9328 and traceability to a national weather service transmissometer. A backscatter receiver adds stronger precipitation classification, and in combination with the heated precipitation sensor and temperature input it supports identification of freezing precipitation types.

Long deployments are supported by a rugged hard coat anodised aluminium enclosure, automatic window contamination monitoring with compensation and two-stage cleaning warnings, plus functional test mode for integration and commissioning. ASCII messages are available over RS-232 or RS-422/RS-485 at user-selectable intervals or on request, with an optional ALS-2 interface appending ambient light data directly to the output.

Features

Visibility, codes and precipitation amount

Outputs visibility plus WMO Table 4680 and METAR codes, significant past weather, and precipitation amount.

Forward scatter and backscatter sensing

Uses forward scatter optics with an additional backscatter receiver for precipitation discrimination using signal ratio.

Integrated precipitation sensor

Includes an external integrated precipitation sensor to support discrimination between liquid and different frozen precipitation types.

Integrated temperature and humidity sensing

Uses a Pt 100 air temperature sensor (-30°C to +70°C) and capacitive humidity sensing (0 - 100% RH).

Serial communication

Transmits ASCII messages via RS-232 or RS-422/RS-485 at user-selectable intervals or on request.

ALS-2 interface option

Supports an optional ALS-2 interface that appends ambient light data directly to the output.

Self-test and functional test mode

Provides continuous self-test and a functional test mode to simulate visibility, weather, contamination and fault conditions.

Contamination monitoring and heaters

Includes automatic window contamination monitoring on all sensor windows and window heaters as standard, with optional hood heaters.
