Thunderstorm warning system for outdoor lightning risk

BTD-1

Thunderstorm warning system for outdoor lightning risk, detecting cloud-to-ground, intra-cloud and cloud-to-cloud flashes to 35 km as standard or 83 km optionally, with RS422, relays and IP66 housing.

Introduction

Outdoor sites need clear lightning risk information before people, assets or operations are exposed. The BTD-1 detects the presence and range of lightning flashes by monitoring the background quasi-electrostatic field, giving early warning of overhead thunderstorm conditions before the first nearby strike.

The system detects cloud-to-ground, intra-cloud and cloud-to-cloud lightning, plus charged precipitation, strong electric field and severe storm conditions. It measures to 35 km as standard, extendable to 83 km, with 1 m range resolution and a false alarm rate below 1% within 35 km or below 2% within 83 km.

Built for renewable energy sites, airports, industrial plants, marine and harbour facilities, outdoor sports venues and construction sites, the BTD-1 supports standalone use and system integration. RS422 communication, three internal relays and 2-second broadcast messaging support monitoring and data handling. The IP66 aluminum housing uses stainless steel M12 connectors.

Features

Quasi-electrostatic detection

The sensor monitors the background quasi-electrostatic field to detect the presence and range of lightning flashes.

Storm event monitoring

The system identifies charged precipitation, strong electric field and severe storm conditions alongside lightning activity.

Configurable risk levels

Four risk levels, All-Clear, Caution, Warning and Alert, can be configured according to site requirements.

Serial communication

RS422 communication uses an ASCII command set with a broadcast message transmitted every two seconds.

Internal relays

Three relays can be configured for alert, warning and sensor fault functions for direct connection to external systems.

GPS/GNSS timing

The integrated GPS/GNSS module supports UTC-based flash timing, synchronized to GPS time within 30 ms.

Optional direction finder

The Direction Finder module provides lightning bearing when fitted and detected by the sensor.

Modular accessories

Optional field mounting kit, solar kit, radio module and configuration kit support different deployment scenarios.
