Visibility sensor for road tunnels and pollution monitoring

RWS-30

Visibility sensor for road and tunnel applications, measuring MOR from 200 m to 99.99 km and EXCO from 0.03 to 15 km-1, with RS232/RS422/RS485, 0...10 V and 4–20 mA outputs.

Introduction

Tunnel safety systems need early visibility changes to be detected before pollution or smoke becomes a serious operational risk. RWS-30 is a forward scatter visibility sensor for road and tunnel applications, measuring MOR and EXCO to support fog detection, pollution monitoring, fire-related smoke detection and ventilation control.

The compact optical design is built for stable readings in demanding environments and is not affected by lights. Window contamination monitoring continuously checks both sensor head windows, applies automatic correction and provides staged cleaning warnings, helping maintenance teams act only when service is needed. Calibration is traceable to a national weather service transmissometer, supporting confidence in long-term measurement quality.

RWS-30 integrates into RWIS and tunnel control systems through RS232, RS422 or RS485 serial data, plus 0...10 V and 4–20 mA analog outputs for MOR or EXCO. Optional volt-free relays provide direct thresholds for alarms, tunnel entrance signs or ventilation systems. The powder coated aluminum housing is rated IP66/IP67 and operates from -40 °C to +60 °C.
