Radar level sensor for tanks up to 10,000 mm

RADARCONT RU4SR

Radar level sensor for distance, level and volume measurement in liquid media up to 10,000 mm. The 122 - 123 GHz FMCW sensor offers 1 mm resolution, 8° beam angle and IO-Link®, RS485 Modbus-RTU, 4–20 mA or PP switch output.

Introduction

Tank level measurement becomes difficult when temperature shifts, vapor, dust or installation parts disturb conventional sensor technologies. RADARCONT® RU4SR uses 122 - 123 GHz FMCW radar to measure distance, fill level and volume without contact, with a range up to 10,000 mm and 1 mm resolution.

The narrow 8° radiation angle helps reduce interference from internal tank structures. This makes the sensor well suited to liquid media in industrial tanks, including applications with gas layers, foam formation or conditions where optical and ultrasonic sensors can reach their limits.

Commissioning and integration stay flexible. Depending on the variant, the compact sensor provides RS485 Modbus-RTU, IO-Link®, 4–20 mA current output or PP switching output, with remote monitoring and parameter setting available via IO-Link or RS485 Modbus-RTU. Its ingress protection (IP69K/IP67) and -40 °C to +85 °C ambient temperature range support reliable use in demanding environments.

Features

FMCW radar measurement

The sensor emits a 122 - 123 GHz radar signal and determines distance from the reflected signal. It measures without contact and can be used for distance, fill level and volume values.

Liquid media applications

The device is intended for liquid media and industrial tanks up to 10 m. The manual also describes use with liquids under gas layering or foam formation, depending on the application conditions.

Through-wall measurement

Radar technology allows measurement through suitable non-conductive materials, including plastic container walls and protective windows made from PTFE or PP.

Output variants

Available electronics include RS485 Modbus-RTU and IO-Link® variants. The IO-Link® version can also provide current 0/4…20 mA or one or two PP switching outputs, depending on configuration.

Process connections

The compact sensor is installed via ISO 228-1 threaded process connections in G 1“, G ¾“ or G ½“ sizes.

Signal filtering

Adjustable signal filters include jumpy, fast, slow and max. peak options for defining how the measured signal is evaluated.
